3 Reasons to Clean Your Gutters During the Fall

Summer is traditionally thought of as the month that involves the most home and lawn care. The weather is perfect during the summer, meaning that it’s a great time for outdoor projects and exterior improvements to your property. However, a critical error that many people make is failing to continue that work ethic into the fall season. There’s actually many things that you need to do in order to prepare your home for the fall, with the biggest priority being cleaning out your gutters. You absolutely need to clean out your gutters before and during fall, especially if you just closed on one of the Pittsburgh houses for sale or Seattle real estate and are expecting a lot of rain. So why is cleaning your gutters so important? Here are three reasons why you need to clean your gutters to prepare for the fall season.

Prevent Water Damage

The biggest reason why you should keep your gutters clean during the fall months is to prevent water damage around your home. Fall is a time period where leaves and lots of other debris can enter your gutter. At first you might not think much of this debris, but if you leave it unchecked it can really become a major headache. Piles of debris can prevent proper water flow from your gutters, causing water to not drain properly. Not having water drain properly is a major problem, as lots of damage can be done to both the interior and exterior of your home. Water could overflow and run down your home’s siding, causing some major water damage on the side of your house. Alternatively, water could overflow onto the dirt surrounding your home, eroding soil and causing major foundation issues around your home. Repairing this damage around your home can be extremely costly, so it’s best to nip this problem in the bud and clean your gutters before it becomes a major issue.

Keep Pests Away

Another reason why you should clean your gutters during the fall months is to keep pests away from your home. When your gutters become clogged with leaves and other debris, it creates the perfect breeding ground for rodents, insects, and other pests. These pests love making homes in messy areas like this, and by not cleaning your gutter you’re essentially inviting them in. Pests can be a huge hassle to deal with, especially if it leads to a major infestation. You could lose lots of money in damages to pests, and you could be on the hook for a large bill if you eventually need to hire someone to eliminate the pests. Pests can be a major annoyance that can cost you lots of money, so you should do anything in your power to prevent them from gaining a foothold in your home.

Save on Roof Damage

Although siding and foundation damage is possible from clogged gutters, it isn’t the only type of damage that you have to worry about. Another major form of damage that stems from clogged gutters is roof damage. If your gutter is filled with debris, then water will likely run over and onto your roof. Having too much water on your roof can cause some major problems, including rotten shingles and even water leaking into the home. Repairing your roof and the leaks that come with it can get extremely expensive, especially if the damage is extensive. Due to this, you want to prevent roof damage at all costs, and you should be constantly ensuring that your gutter is free of debris.
